Undercover cops to scour pubs

A POLICE undercover operation targeted bars and clubs to stop sneak thieves ruining revellers’ nights out.

More than 20 thefts have been reported to police in Durham City since December, with the majority of items pinched from handbags of women in Loveshack, in Walkergate, and Durham Live, in North Road.

Unattended bags were being ransacked for mobile phones and cash.

The operation, over two weekends, resulted in three suspects being arrested. An 18-year-old man and a woman in her 30s admitted the offences separately and agreed to accept cautions, while another woman in her 30s was released with no further police action.

Pc Kay Howarth, beat officer for Durham, said: “The management of both venues were very keen to work with us. They want their law-abiding customers to enjoy their visit and not become victims of crime.

“There haven’t been any thefts since we made the arrests, but this proactive work will continue.

“We have potential thieves in our sights and will continue to target them.

“We also want to ask people not to make it easy for thieves. Keep your handbag with you at all times and make sure it’s fastened so that no valuable items are on display.”
