Underage checks on tanning salons

TANNING salons have been tested to ensure they are complying with new age restriction laws.

New legislation, banning the use of sunbeds by people under 18, came into effect in April.

Durham County Council’s trading standards team has been checking premises, including in the Chester-le-Street area, to ensure they are complying with the law.

Using a 16-year-old girl volunteer, attempts were made to use tanning equipment at nine businesses in the county.

Eight challenged the volunteer on her age. One made an illegal sale and is being investigated.

It could be fined up to £20,000 if prosecuted.
