UKIP knocked the Conservatives into third place in two Sunderland seats as Nigel Farage’s party saw big swings in the city.

The anti-European party polled ahead of the Tories in Washington and Sunderland West and Houghton and Sunderland South, seeing +16% and +17% respectively.

In Sunderland Central Farage’s party came in third. In total it polled 23,598 votes across the city, just 300 votes behind the Conservatives overall.

The Lib Dems meanwhile took a pummelling, coming in fourth behind the Greens. In Houghton and Sunderland South and Washington and Sunderland West they polled fewer than 1,000 votes.

All three Sunderland Lib Dem candidates lost their deposits, failing to gain at least five per cent of the vote.
