Official records suggest that the North-East has proved a hotbed for UFO sightings across the years.

North-East UFO sightings uncovered
Here is just a flavour of the dozens of reports from across the region which have been logged by the Government and police forces.
July 7, 2011: A report logged by Northumbria Police notes: "Caller witnessed a large black silent disc." The force's records describe the caller as "genuine".
August 7, 2010: Northumbria Police report that "a genuine caller" said they had a "sighting of UFO", adding: "Caller states that they saw a light in the sky that was white and orange and round like a frisbee."
November 9, 2009, at 5.10pm: "Orange ball shape going across the sky on a flight path. Silent. So concerned called 999."
February 24, 2009, at 6.45pm: "Saw four spaceships that flew over the house into the sky. They had a bright light that faded and was then gone. They returned to the same spot they had come from."
August 30, 2008: "Sodium coloured lights were travelling North West. Initially, four circular bright lights were travelling in convoy. Two of the lights made a vertical change of direction. One looked like a bright orange orb."
December 15, 2007, 8.45pm: "Lights were seen in the sky."
August 13, 2007, at 10.45pm: "There were two objects of the same brightness. They were slow, erratic, changing direction and suddenly slowing and stopping."
October 31, 2006, at 9.30pm: "A black triangular UFO was seen, with three lights on it."
October 14, 2006, at 5.30pm: "A silver pyramid that was rotating at a low speed and off centre."
August 2006 (no firm date): "There were many lights seen up in the sky."
July 29, 2006, at 10pm: A Durham Police officer said "six yellow/orange lights were seen, travelling in a line/slightly staggered, from South to North."
July 29, 2006, at 10.40pm: "Nine balls of orange light were seen. They were following each other and were drifting Northwards. They were visible for about five minutes."
November 29, 1999, at 6.30pm: "Two small, ball shaped objects. Orange in colour. Bright and then dim. They were moving upwards."
July 14, 1999, at 3pm: "Bright silver object. Was stationary."
April 21, 1998, at 1am: "Numerous crescent shaped white lights. Very bright. There was one red light. They moved slow at first, and then picked up speed."
March 23, 1993: UFO spotted over a house "at a very slow rate of speed and making odd manoeuvres".
March 1993: An "object of considerable size" was said to be hovering and moving very slowly.
The information has been collated from sightings reported to the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and local police forces. The MoD closed its UFO desk in 2009 and has not logged subsequent sightings.
