POLICE have now arrested more than 20 people in connection with trouble at Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby.

Northumbria Police said on Sunday that 17 people had been apprehended in Newcastle for public order offences, assault, breach of banning orders and drug offences.

That figure has now gone up to 23, a spokeswoman said.

Operations commander, chief superintendent Steve Neill praised the vast majority of both sets of fans for their behaviour, with no major incidents taking place.
