TWO men have been arrested over an arson attack which led a couple and their newborn baby to flee their home.
The fire was sparked after thugs put an accelerant through the letter box of the front door of the semi-detached house in Geddes Road, Grindon, at 12.25am on Tuesday.
The woman, who is said to have lived there with her four-day-old girl, her 19-month-old boy and her partner, managed to call the emergency services to the scene, but the boyfriend was able to put out the blaze before it spread.
Firefighters were at the scene until 2.30am as they dealt with the aftermath of the damage.
The door of the rented home remains damaged and it is said the family are now staying with relatives.
Northumbria Police have arrested a 25-year-old man and a 41-year-old man on suspicion of arson with intent and have been bailed as inquiries continue.
Officers investigating the arson attack have renewed their appeal for help and have urged any witnesses to get in touch with them.
Additional police have been in the area following the fire to offer residents reassurance.
