No mainline trains were running between Sunderland and Newcastle and no Metro services between Pelaw and South Hylton on Sunday afternoon (October 4).

The outage had affected all Sunderland stations, as well as Metro services in South Tyneside at East Boldon, Fellgate and Brockley Whins stations, and mainline rail services from the Heworth interchange.

Network Rail staff were called to the site of the damage and have now repaired the lines.

The service has now resumed and is running to schedule.

A spokesman for railway operator Northern said: “Disruption caused by damage to the overhead electric wires at Sunderland has now ended.

Services are no longer affected by this problem.”

Ticket acceptance on both Stagecoach and Go North East buses were put in place for Metro users while the suspension was in place.
