Traffic lights off at the A690 roundabout after car crashes into lamppost and driver fled scene

A police search is under way to find the driver of a car involved in a crash at the Doxford Park roundabout in Sunderland.

Witnesses say a car crashed at the roundabout damaging a lamppost and traffic signals late on Thursday evening (December 12).

The driver of the vehicle, which had crashed into the roundabout, had left the scene before emergency services arrived.

Three other cars, that were stationary at the time of the crash, were damaged by flying debris.

Nobody was injured in the crash but an investigation is ongoing by police offers who are trying to trace the driver.

Sunderland City Council has confirmed the traffic lights were damaged in the crash and drivers are urged to use a different route.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 11.38pm on Thursday, we received a report of a multi-vehicle road traffic collision on the A690 roundabout at Doxford Park, Sunderland.

“It was reported that a vehicle was in collision with a lamppost, causing significant damage. Emergency services attended but the occupant of the car had already left the scene.

“Three other cars that were stationary at the roundabout were damaged by the resulting debris. Thankfully, nobody was injured.

“An investigation is ongoing as officers look to trace the driver in question and determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.

“Any witnesses who have yet to come forward are asked to call 101 quoting reference 1146 121219 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
