POLICE are appealing for witnesses after two girls were hit by a car in Sunderland

It happened on St Mary’s Way next to the junction of Back Bridges Street at 7pm on Tuesday, January 27 when two 15-year-old girls were crossing the road from the Monkwearmouth Bridge to the city centre.

They were struck by a car coming from the city centre travelling towards Hendon.

Both suffered minor injuries.

The car is described a white Vauxhall Corsa-type vehicle.

Police say the driver of the car stopped and spoke to the teenagers, asking if they needed help, before driving off.

Officers investigating the collision need to trace the driver of the car and are also appealing for witnesses.

Anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed the collision is asked to contact Northumbria Police on 101 ext 69191.
