10.40pm: Road remains closed near collision spot

Here's the latest look at the road closure near Sainsbury's North Sunderland.

We're just about finished for today, but here's the latest from the roads near the Northern Spire Bridge according to the Google traffic map.

9.05pm: Traffic cam shows empty dual carriageway as investigations continue into crash

A still from the traffic cameras overseen by @NELiveTraffic of Wessington Way as the road remains closed.

This camera shot shows how how the route has been closed off to motorists as crash investigators continue their work on the road.

Diversions are in place across the North Hylton, Castletown and Southwick areas.

8.30pm: 'Urinating passenger' leads bus service to be cancelled 😕

Some unfortunate news from Go North East: 

"We're sorry but due to a passenger urinating on the vehicle, the 20:10 21 service due to depart from Durham will not be operating.

8pm: Road closures in action as investigations into Wessington Way collision continue

Road closures are in place around the A1231 Wessington Way as inquiries continue.

This is how it looks around Wessington Way as police investigations continue into the collision earlier this evening, with the restrictions likely to remain in place until around midnight.

6.40pm: Road closures could be in place until midnight after collision near Northern Spire Bridge

Sunderland City Council has issued this statement following on from the crash in Wessington Way this eveing: 

"Please be advised that following a serious RTC, the following roads are closed or severely restricted:

"A1290 between Queen Alexandra Bridge and Northern Spire Bridge, Both Eastbound and westbound.

"A1231 eastbound, between Colima Avenue and Castletown Way

"Northbound movement from A1231 Northern Spire Bridge onto Castletown Way (north to westbound movement from A1231 Northern Spire Bridge to A1231 Wessington Way westbound should be passable,

"Police have estimated these closures may remain in place until midnight or later, whilst they continue investigations."

Police on the scene of the collision earlier this evening.

5.30pm: A194 reopen in both directions following on from earlier crash

The crash scene has been fully reopened following the earlier collision.

6.23pm: Road closure information

Whilst the accident investigation work takes place tonight there will be closures on the following roads:

A1231 East between the Colima Ave Rbt & Castletown Way

A1290 East & West from QA Bridge

A1231 Northern Spire NB  left turn only

Castletown Way closed

6.15pm: Teenage girl suffered life threatening injuries in Wessington Way crash

A teenage girl suffered potential life threatening injuries after she with hit by a car on Wessington Way near the Northern Spire bridge. 

She was transported by air ambulance to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, where she is being treated for potentially life threatening injuries.

Police are now are appealing for witnesses to the crash which happened near Sainsburys just after 4.30pm.

Emergency services attended the scene to help the pedestrian, a female in her teens.

We are appealing for witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage to assist by calling 101 quoting log 770 19/02/20.

5.55pm: Teenage girl hit by car on Wessington Way

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 4.36 pm we received a report of a collision between a car and a young female pedestrian at Wessington Way, Sunderland, near Sainsburys.

“The teen was transported by air ambulance to the RVI.”

5.40pm: Tailbacks across Sunderland

There are huge queues of traffic across Sunderland after an accident near the Northern Spire bridge.
