Section of A19 closed due to flooding

Part of the A19 has been closed off to traffic between Seaham and Sunderland after the heavy rain caused the road to flood.

The northbound side of the road has been closed off from the A1018 junction to Ryhope to the A690 Durham Road today, Wednesday, February 3, with diversions in place.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service has sent three of its appliances to the scene to help protect nearby homes from damage.

It said: “We have fire engines on scene helping to protect homes from flooding.

"There's severe traffic disruption & diversions are in place.”

It has advised drivers to keep a look out for updates and to allow extra time for their journey.

It comes after Northumbria Police earlier shut off access from the the A19 sliproad to the A690 Durham Road due to flooding.

The force tweeted: “Due to adverse weather conditions, motorists are advised that the A19 Northbound exit slip at the junction of the A690 has been closed to to flooding in Sunderland.

"Highways England staff and Police are at scene dealing.”

Go North East has also said its 20 service towards Durham is unable to serve stops at Gillas Lane and Seaham Road due to an incident near Lake Road and Seaham Road, with passengers asked to catch the bus from Hetton Road.
