Drivers are being urged to find an alternative route.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 3.15pm today, we received a report of a one vehicle collision on the A1 near Washington services.

"It was reported a Mercedes travelling south has collided with the central reservation, blocked traffic on both sides of the carriageway.

"No one is thought to have sustained any injuries, but motorists are asked to avoid the area while emergency services are in attendance and the debris is cleaned.”
