Live blog: Police on scene of A19 collision which has blocked road

Traffic police have been on the scene of a crash which left the A19 blocked to southbound traffic.

1.45pm: A serious road accident has blocked the A19 southbound near Hartlepool.

Highways England says a collision has been reported just before Sheraton, with Durham Constabulary's Road Policing Unit in attendance.

It has said the crash has blocked the carriageway, with congestion building up in the area.

1.50pm: The closure of the A19 is affecting bus services in the area.

1.55pm: It has been reported that a vehicle has overturned.

2.05pm: Police haver confirmed a car has overturnd on the A1- but say no-one was seriously hurt.

A Durham Constabulary spokeswoman said: "We were called at 12.45pm to a one vehicle collision on the A19 southbound, near the Sheraton turn off.

"It is believed a Nissan Juke struck a lamppost and rolled, leaving the two occupants with minor injuries.

“The road has been closed to allow for recovery of the vehicle.”

2.20pm: More information about bus services in the area.

2.40pm: Highways England had released an update on the situation.

It includes details of the diversions in operation at the scene.

"The A19 in County Durham is closed southbound between the A181 (Castle Eden) and the A179 (Sheraton) due to collision involving a single car which has over-turned.

"Durham Police are on scene along with paramedics and contractors from Highways England.

"A diversion is available around the closure. 

"Exit at the A181 and follow the route marked with a hollow square symbol on local road signs.

"This will direct traffic along the B1281 eastbound to Blackhall Colliery. 

"Turn right on to the A1086 south and continue towards Hartlepool. 

"At the roundabout with the A179 and A1049 take the third exit.

"Follow the A179 westbound to rejoin the A19 at Sheraton.

"Please allow additional time for your journey if travelling in the area.

"Further incident and traffic flow information is available on our www.trafficengland.com website and travel apps, or via our @HighwaysNEAST regional twitter feed.

“For urgent real time assistance, our 24/7 contact centre team is able to provide up to the minute information on 0300 123 5000.”

3pm: County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service has released details of its role in the incident.

A service spokeswoman said: "Cleveland Fire Service received a call at 12:46 and they had attended.

"The incident was on our border so Cleveland passed it to us at 13:06. 

"We responded to an incident on the A19, with one vehicle on its side. Two persons in the vehicle were out of the car when our appliance arrived.

"Police, ambulance and highways agency were in attendance.

“Fire crews assisted the highways agency to make the vehicle safe. The stop call came in at 14:50.”

4.25pm. Durham Constabulary has confirmed the road has now reopened.
