A driver was left with life-threatening injuries after a collision in Houghton.
The 23-year-old was in a Fiat Punto travelling along Hetton Road when it left the carriageway at around 11.30pm on Saturday night.
It just missed a bus stop and then collided with some furniture that had been left in the street before coming to rest in a garden.
Emergency services were called, and it is believed firefighters had to cut the driver free.
He was taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary with life-threatening injuries and his condition is described as stable.
His 19-year-old female passenger suffered minor injuries and was also taken to hospital for treatment.
The road was closed for around six hours after the collision.
Today, shattered glass could been seen all over the pavement.
One neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: “I saw the blue flashing lights going off late on Saturday night, so I knew something happened but I didn’t realise what until the morning. I couldn’t really see because of the hedge.
“The lady who owns the house where the car hit the garden fence has been out all morning sweeping away the debris, there’s glass and bits all over.
“Her fence has came right away from where it should be. I do hope those concerned are okay.”
Police inquiries are continuing and officers are appealing for anyone who saw the incident, or the circumstances leading up to it.
In particular, they would like to speak to the driver of a light coloured vehicle who was travelling in the same direction as the Fiat Punto from the area of Durham Road into Hetton and back towards Houghton Road.
The driver, or any witnesses to the incident, are asked to contact police on 101 extension 69191 quoting reference 1269 24/10/15.
