A SUNDERLAND driver who died in an early morning smash with a lorry on the A1 yesterday has been named.
David Patrick Leonard, 45, from Hylton Road, was driving a red coloured Renault Clio which collided with a lorry on the northbound carriageway between junctions 60 for the A689 at Sedgefield and 61 junction at Bowburn.
The accident happened around 1.15am as the Clio was heading north in the outside lane.
Police say for some reason it then drifted onto the central grass reserve, struck one of the wire rope barrier supports and then went back across the carriageway where it collided with a barrier on the nearside.
It then rebounded back into the path of the articulated lorry, which had also been heading north.
As a result Mr Leonard suffered serious internal injuries and was confirmed dead at the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough later yesterday morning.
The lorry driver, a 58-year-old man from Chester-le-Street was shocked but unhurt.
Police are appealing for witnesses, to either the collision itself or anyone who may have seen the Renault Clio on the motorway around that time.
They are asked to contact the collision investigation unit on 375 2159.
