A Northumbrian Water spokesperson said: “Our teams were called to a burst water pipe on Kier Hardie Way, Sunderland, this morning.

“This resulted in the closure of the westbound carriageway, between Queens Road and Lilburn Place due to damage to the carriageway and the need to clear water from the road.

“While the repair has since been completed, the lane closure and diversion remain in place while we carry out repairs to the road itself. We anticipate the road to re-open on Friday and will give updates when they are available on our Twitter feed at @nwater_care.

“We’d like to apologise for the inconvenience caused to those in the affected area and thank them for their patience and understanding while we work as quickly as possible to return things back to normal.”
