A1M reopens fully after accident sees two people taken to hospital

Highways England Tweeted shortly before 2pm that the southbound carriageway was closed between Junction 62 at Carrville and Junction 61 at Bowburn.

One lane initially remained closed for recovery but the carriageway has now fully reopened.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 13.24 to a multi-vehicle road traffic collision on the A1M at Bowburn near junction 61 in Durham.

"We dispatched two double-crewed ambulances and delivered two patients to the University Hospital of North Durham with neck and back injuries.”

A Durham Constabulary spokeswoman said: “Police were called at 1.35pm today to a two-vehicle collision on the A1m southbound, just before Bowburn services.

“Paramedics and the fire service also attended the scene, but thankfully nobody suffered any serious injuries.

“Both vehicles - an Audi and a Ford Kuga – have since been recovered and the road is clear.”
