A1(M) reopens following closure due to nearby factory fire

The A1(M) at Gateshead has been reopened following a closure in both directions due to a nearby factory fire.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service remains at the scene of the factory fire in Blaydon, Gateshead which caused the A1(M) to be shut in both directions earlier on Monday morning (May 11).

The closures was in place from junction 74 Scotswood southbound to junction 73 Derwenthaugh Road northbound.

This has now been reopened although firefighters remain at the scene of the incident.

A fire service spokesman added: “The factory fire in Blaydon Gateshead is now scaling back, appliances are starting to leave the scene.

“We have just been informed that the A1 has now reopened following on from the incident in Blaydon.”

A Highways England spokesman said: “All closures A1 J73 / J74 Blaydon Bridge have now been removed. The road is open and traffic is flowing in both directions.”
