Train passengers hit with fare price rise

TRAIN passengers in the North have been hit with increased fares which will add up to 11 per cent to the cost of travel.

Regulated fares, which include season tickets, will rise by an average of six per cent but many travellers will find prices have increased by much more.

Visitors heading to London from Newcastle on an East Coast Trains service face rises of up to 9.3 per cent, potentially adding £25 on a return trip.

Travelling to Birmingham one way with Cross Country Trains is up by about 8.4 per cent, adding £7.50 to the cost of an Anytime Single ticket.

Even shorter journeys are not immune to the changes, with Northern Rail trips from Middlesbrough to Heworth up more than 5.5 per cent.
