One person taken to hospital after five-vehicle collision closes lane on the A1M

Fire crews, police officers, the North East Ambulance Service and Highways England attended the scene of a five-vehicle collision on the A1M.

The incident, confirmed by Highways on its Twitter account at around 1.45pm on Sunday, December 8, partially closed the road southbound between Junction 63, at Chester-le-Street, and Junction 62 at Carrville for around an hour.

Highways England said traffic passed through the affected area using the hard shoulder.

An ambulance service spokeswoman confirmed one patient was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital.
