“He was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital for treatment but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.”

The northbound carriageway between the A1018 and the A690 on the major North East road was closed for a number of hours for the car and debris to be cleared by officers.

Highways England reported that the closure was reduced to one lane at around 1am but at around 1.45am, due to the amount of debris on the carriageway, a full closure was back in place.

The road was fully reopened shortly after 2am.
