Man airlifted to hospital after being hit by minibus in crash on A690 heading to Sunderland

Northumbria Police and the North East Ambulance Service are at the scene on the eastbound carriageway of the A690.

Emergency services were called to reports of a collision between a man and a vehicle believed to be a minibus at around 8.20am.

The man has now been taken to hospital but his condition is not known at this time.

The Great North Air Ambulance landed at 9.10am and airlifted the man to Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle, following treatment at the scene.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “Police received a report of a collision on the A690 Durham Road on Tuesday, August 20. “At about 8.35am officers attended the scene where a man had collided with a vehicle. “Ambulance service are in attendance and the man has been taken to hospital. It is not known of his condition at this time. “The road is currently closed and diversions are in place.”

The air ambulance landed on the road earlier this morning (Tuesday August 20) and the carriageway was closed.

The carriageway remains closed and a diversion route is currently in place via the A182.

A spokesman for the ambulance service added: “We were called at 8.24am to reports of a road traffic collision between a pedestrian and a minibus.

“We are still at the scene.”

The crash occurred at Over The Hill Farm, in Houghton.
