Three men have been taken to hospital after a house fire in Sunderland this morning.
A crew from Sunderland Central fire station was called to a house in Princess Street, close to the city centre, around 7am.
A 29-year-old man was taken to the RVI in Newcastle, suffering burns to his hands, legs and feet, while two men, aged 20 and 21, were taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital with breathing difficulties.
A fire in the front bedroom had been extinguished by the time firefighters arrived.
“The fire was out but the scene was a bit chaotic,” said watch manager Garry Teasdale.
“The man with the burns was in a lot of pain and the other two were having problems breathing, so we administered first aid to all three and then handed them on to the paramedics.
“Fortunately, they had a working smoke alarm, which alerted them to the fire.”
The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
