Two crews from Tyne and Wear Rescue Service were called just after 8.50am on Thursday, June 25, to reports of a fire in Sunderland Marina.

Firefighters from Sunderland Central battled to extinguish the fire which had spread across three boats in the marina.

The fire is believed to have started accidentally by an electrical fault on one of the boats before it then spread to neighbouring vessels.

Dramatic pictures show one of the boats engulfed by flames as firefighters use a hose to bring the fire under control.

Photographs also show the damage to the boats following the blaze – which caused one of the vessels to sink.

A spokesman for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: “Crews have just put the stop in and are getting ready to leave now.

“One boat, 16ftx20ft, was on fire, it spread to two nearby vessels of a similar size. The first boat was 100% severely damaged by the fire and sunk. The second was 50% severely damaged by fire and the third was 30% severely damaged.

“Crews used one jet to extinguish the fire and the thermal image camera.

“The cause is believed to be electrical and accidental.”
