POSTAL voters can begin voting in Sunderland next week in the parliamentary and city council elections.

More than 87,000 of Sunderland’s 208,000 registered voters have chosen to vote by post for the elections on Thursday, May 7.

Those who have not yet registered have until Monday to do so. The first postal votes will start to be delivered on Tuesday.

Dave Smith, the city’s Returning Officer, said: “Voting is important and we would urge anyone not already registered for the May elections to do so immediately.”

As well as the parliamentary constituencies of Houghton and Sunderland South, Sunderland Central, and Washington and Sunderland West, there are 25 of the 75 seats on Sunderland City Council up for election, one in each of the city’s 25 electoral wards.

An election for Hetton Town Council is also being held.
