REACH for the stars at the National Glass Centre.
After teaming up with Sunderland Astronomical Society, the venue is hosting an astronomy day on Sunday.
The event will feature solar observing sessions, mirror making demonstrations, children’s activities and talks aimed at those interested in learning more about the wonders of the night sky.
All talks and activities are free and the day will run from 11am to 5pm.
Activities will include:
l Stick and paste art activities for young children and families to support the Kelly Richardson exhibition Orion Tide;
l A light hearted talk around the Alfonz the Alien children’s trail;
l A talk to support the Mirror to Discovery exhibition – the manufacture of the Palomar Mountain Observatory Mirror;
l A talk to support the Look to the Sky exhibition which will explore cosmology.
Demonstrations will include:
l Solar observing on the National Glass Centre roof (weather permitting);
l Mirror grinding demonstration – see what is involved in creating a telescope lens.
