TESTS have confirmed a popular student died from a severe strain of meningitis.

Christopher McKee was found in March by flatmates at the Sunderland University accommodation they shared.

Friends who lived in the six-bedroom flat with Christopher at The Forge, in Pallion, were offered antibiotics as a precaution, along with anyone who came into close contact with the sports journalism student.

Now post-mortem examinations have revealed the 21-year-old, from Northern Ireland, died after contracting bacterial meningitis.

His grieving family decided not to request a public inquest hearing and a verdict of death by natural causes has been recorded by Sunderland Coroner Derek Winter.
