Ten pence mix-ups and a mean corned beef pie - what a Sunderland street that is!
Thirlaways, Hodgsons, Silver Grid and much more were open for business in 1987 and all were included in the archive photograph we posted online.
It brought back wonderful recollections for people and 26,000 of you spotted our social media post.

Hide AdDavid Fox had a fantastic memory of excellent customer service. He explained: “Got my first colour TV from a small shop in Sea Road. I asked how long it would be before delivery and he said “ If you can give me a few minutes I”ll give you a lift home in the van” . “ha” .. I cant remember the name of the shop.? it was a long time ago. 70s.”
Steven Oliver got our tastebuds. He recalled: “the delicious chips that the Silver Grid served up, in a paper cone and with batter scraps. Yum! :)”
Margaret Crosbie doesn’t live in the area these days but she said: “One good place is the black cats cafe ithink that is its name. They make a mean corned beef pie in fact every thing that make is spot on.i come all the way from middlesbrough for a good meal in the café !!”
Thanks, too, to Christine Glass-Young who recalled: “Arrrr my sweet shop .. Spend ages in there picking my 10p mix up. Hodgsons. Miss the old sea road.”

Hide AdGreg Little called it the “Best road in the world” while Chris Sumby remembered: “Hodgsons and the pork shop opposite for dinner :-).”
And we must highlight Amanda Burford who said the current traders are working hard to keep the area thriving. She said: “We small businesses are working our backsides off to try promote and gain attention. We have a lot of little unique businesses in Sea Road and Fulwell! Same as everything, use it or lose it. X”
