TWO people have appeared in court accused of taking part in a gang rape of a teenager.

Lewis Bates, 18, and a 17-year-old male, each face three charges of rape after an incident in Blackhall, on Bank Holiday Monday, last month.

Three other men have been arrested and bailed as police inquiries continue.

Bates, of Runciman Road, Hartlepool, and the 17-year-old appeared at Durham Crown Court via videolink from prison.

No charges were put during the short preliminary hearing.

Judge Christopher Prince adjourned the case until October 3.

Judge Prince ordered both defendants to stay in custody.
