THIS is the first picture of a 19-year-old who died in road crash as he tried to move a broken-down car.

Dominic Scarre, from Low Moor Cottages in Finchale, on the outskirts of Durham City, was killed when he was hit by a Ford Transit van on the eastbound carriageway of the A689 in Sedgefield.

He had been travelling in a Peugeot 406 car driven by his stepmother, who was taking Dominic to a forklift truck driving course.

It appears the car ran out of fuel and Dominic got out, intending to push it up on to the kerb.

However, he was hit by the van and he suffered multiple injuries which proved fatal.

His stepmother suffered minor back and neck injuries and was treated at North Tees Hospital, while the 27-year-old driver of the van also needed treatment at the same hospital for minor injuries.

He was then arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and released on police bail.
