AN TEENAGER was beaten and robbed by a gang of thugs who leapt out of two cars.

The 18-year-old was walking alone along Belvedere Road, Thornhill, when he was approached by two men as he reached the junction with Stockton Road.

The men then started punching him as they launched into a vicious attack.

Two cars pulled over before a group of men jumped out and joined in the beating.

The thugs then snatched the man’s mobile phone and a small amount of cash before fleeing, leaving the injured victim on the ground.

Emergency services were called and he was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital. Police said his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Officers believe there were between six and eight men involved in the attack, which happened on Tuesday, March 15 at about 10.15pm. It is thought the cars were a silver Vauxhall Corsa and a blue Renault Clio.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Acting Neighbourhood Inspector Craig Briggs, who heads the neighbourhood policing team for the area, said: “We want to find out who is responsible for this attack so that we can make sure they face the consequences.”
