A teenager has appeared in court accused of raping a woman in Sunderland just minutes after allegedly carrying out a sexual assault on another female.

The 17-year-old male, who cannot be named for legal reasons, stood in the dock at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court, charged with rape, sexual assault and kidnapping in connection with two street attacks in the early hours of Sunday.

He also faces two charges of common assault against two men said to have come to the aid of the women during the two alleged incidents.

The teenager entered no pleas and spoke only to confirm his name, age and address during the hearing.

Police were called to reports of a rape in an alley close to St Marks Church, in Metamba Terrace, Sunderland, at 3.30am on Sunday.

Magistrates were told that a woman had earlier been sexually assaulted by a man in Hylton Road, Sunderland, at about 3am.

James Long, prosecuting, said that the defendant should be remanded in youth custody ahead of a hearing before a district judge on Wednesday.

Ian Cassidy, defending, made no application for bail.

Dr Theresa Waring, remanded the 17-year-old into youth custody ahead of a youth court hearing at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.
