A Washington schoolgirl has helped to bring Christmas cheer by supporting food banks across the region.
Jazmine Nichol, 15, a Year 10 pupil at Oxclose Community Academy, has been collecting selection boxes to be given out alongside emergency food parcels over the festive period.
After speaking with some of the volunteers of her local food bank she was surprised by the amount of people who relied on the emergency food aid.
Jazmine said “I had preconceptions about who was using food banks, but I was completely wrong.
“Everyday people in the UK go hungry.
“It could happen to anyone through redundancy, zero hours contracts, failures in benefits systems etc.
“At this time of year with a cold snap around the corner people are having to make the choice between heating their home or putting food on the table. I knew I wanted to help in some small way.”
She added: “The food banks are run by amazingly dedicated people and it was so nice of the people of the North East to contribute a little treat item to make people’s Christmases just that little bit brighter”.
Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue service agreed to accept donations at any of its community fire stations across the Tyne and Wear area.
Donations were also accepted at Essential Beauty (eyelash extension and beauty specialists) in Concord, Washington.
Jazmine had already dropped off more than 100 selection boxes into Washington Community Food Project in the weeks before Christmas.
Within minutes of her leaving them, they were already being distributed alongside emergency food aid parcels.
“I am overwhelmed by the generosity of people in donating. The people of this region are incredibly compassionate.”
Jazmine will be representing the area at the Miss Teen Galaxy Final in February and is also the current Miss Junior Teen Newcastle.
