Targeting young fire starters

A PIONEERING scheme to help dampen down the number of arson attacks gets under way this week.

Pilot scheme Respect is being trialled with 400 Year 7 and 8 pupils on Friday at a special event aimed to educate youngsters on the dangers of starting fires and cut down on antisocial behaviour.

Firefighters, police, Youth Offending Service workers and other agency staff will be on hand at Southmoor School, in Sunderland, to take part in a host of outdoor activities using firefighting equipment to engage with the pupils and educate them about fire safety.

Watch manager Neil Harrison said: “One of our biggest priorities in the Sunderland district is to reduce the number of deliberately started fires, which are a blight on the community and present a risk to public safety.”
