Hundreds of joggers at the Siglion Sunderland City 10k will be joined by the crew and volunteers of the tall ship James Cook on Sunday, May 13.

And the crew urged even more people to do just what they are doing - pull on their running shoes and join them in the race, which starts and finishes in Keel Square in the city centre.

James Cook’s operators, Ocean Youth Trust North (OYT North), will be represented in the 10k by Nigel Horne, Mark Longbottom, Stephen Douthwaite and first mate Jessie Wellbourn Hesp.

Jessie said: “The Sunderland 10k is a fantastic opportunity for us to get our sea legs on the ground, get involved in more local activities and promote Sail Training and the Tall Ships Races 2018.

“This is my first Tall Ships Race and James Cook is fully booked, taking 60 young people on this adventure with us. We couldn’t be more excited.”

The Run Sunderland Festival 2018 is being organised by Events of the North, in partnership with Sunderland City Council and Active Sunderland.

It features the 3k Active Sunderland Big Fun Run, the Siglion Sunderland City Half Marathon and the 10K.

Sunderland City Council’s head of events Victoria French said: “It is great to hear that local and regional participation isn’t restricted to The Tall Ships Races alone.

“This is a fantastic gesture of support from Ocean Youth Trust North and it is very much appreciated.

“I hope many more young people follow their example and take part in this fantastic celebration of running.”
