Talks over empty fire control centre

A CONTROVERSIAL control centre which costs taxpayers £100,000 to stand empty could be brought back into use as a fire service headquarters.

The Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service is in talks with the Government about taking over the North East Fire Control Centre in Belmont, Durham, to replace its ageing HQ in Framwellgate Moor.

The regional control centre in Belmont has been mothballed since the scrapping of the scheme aimed at bringing Tyne and Wear, Durham and Northumberland services under one roof.

The building cost £12million and is setting the Government back £97,000 a month in rent, with £43,000 a month in other fees.
