SUNDERLAND City Council will today discuss the sale of the Newcastle Road Swimming Baths site.

The cabinet meeting is recommended to agree to the sale of the historic 2.47 acres site to Esh Developments Limited, part of the Esh Group, which wants to build a residential development.

Newcastle Road Swimming Baths closed in April 2008 as council funding was focused on opening the multimillion-pound Aquatic Centre at the Stadium of Light site, Stadium Park.

Demolition of the building was completed last year.

The council owns the freehold of the land and hopes a new development on the site would kick-start a much-needed regeneration of the city.

The swimming baths were purpose-built in 1936 and was open for 72 years.

The council’s cabinet is set to meet today at Sunderland Civic Centre, in Burdon Road.
