A MAN sparked concern after he was spotted struggling in the sea.

The HM Coastguard and Sunderland’s RNLI team were called out just before 7pm yesterday after the man was seen in difficulties near Red Acre Rocks, on the north side of Seaham Harbour.

The RNLI launched two of its boats, but their assistance was cancelled just eight minutes later after he managed to reach shore unaided.

The Coastguard crew, which was alerted as members arrived at their station for their weekly training session, went to help the man.

They found he has suffered cuts to his arm and was suffering from shock.

He was advised to seek medical help, and went to the nearby walk in centre with the support of friends and police.
