FIREFIGHTERS have been called out to two grass fires today

Officers from Peterlee Fire Station were called out to land near Blackhills Farm in Horden, at 5.30pm.

About 200 square foot of gorse was on fire, and due to the high winds, spreading quite rapidly.

Crew manager Paul Marshall said: “We had to call out a second appliance due to the way the fire was spreading because of the high winds.

“We used beaters and our extinguishers to put out the flames.”

The firefighters were then sent to another grass fire which had been reported near by.

It took 45 minutes to extinguish both of the blazes which are being treat as suspicious.
