A SUPER slimmer is looking forward to a healthy 2015 after shedding more than five stone.
Clare Uslu, from Seaham, says she feels like a new woman after dropping from 16st 2lb to 11st.
The mum-of-one was spurred into action when doctors offered her a gastric band to tackle her bulging waistline.
“I thought why should I have something so drastic done, when I could do something myself?” said the 39-year-old.
Clare, who works at 2Touch call centre in Doxford Park, added: “I feel like a completely new woman. I didn’t have the confidence to do loads of things when I was heavier. This gave me the confidence to get a new job in a call centre.”
Clare joined Slimming World in Seaham Methodist Church in November 2013 and steadily began shedding the pounds.
“The only time I socialised before was to go to the cinema or shopping,” she said. “I always thought I was one of those people who would never go to a slimming class.
“I was really frightened about going, but I was made to feel so welcome. I’m at my target weight now, but I still go to the classes.”
Clare has made small changes, like not cooking with oil and walking instead of getting the bus, and doing zumba, which have had a life-changing effect on her weight.
As Clare’s husband, Mustafa, is Turkish she was worried about how to prepare the traditional foods they often eat.
“A lot of Turkish food uses butter in cooking, but I’ve swapped that for a low fat spray and you can’t tell the difference in the taste. I’ve stopped using things like cream in cooking, which has really made a big difference to the amount of fat I eat.”
