Sunderland's Jordan Pickford back on the training ground with England

The Sunderland keeper joined up with the Three Lions last night at their base in Burton after Fraser Forster pulled out of the squad to face Scotland and Spain with injury.

That meant Pickford was in the firing line on the today, facing the likes of Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane, Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge and Jamie Vardy on the training pitch, plus the recalled Jack Wilshere who he thwarted in Sunderland's first win of the season at Bournemouth on Saturday..

It is another chapter in the fairytale for the 22-year-old, from Washington, who will be on the bench at a sold-out Wembley for Friday's World Cup qualifier against the Scots.

Pickford was a sub in Slovenia for the last Group F match, which ended in a goalless draw. .

He was called into Gareth Southgate's squad in place of the injured Tom Heaton and when ex-Newcastle stopper Forster was forced to pull out last night, the interim England head coach had no hesitation in contacting Pickford again.

Pickford had been included in the England U21 squad for their friendlies against Italy and France, alongside Sunderland team-mate, Duncan Watmore.

Pickford clinched his first Premier League win for the Black Cats at the weekend, making a string of saves, including a breathtaking effort late on to deny Josh King.

It prompted boss David Moyes to say: "I said to him 'when your manager comes in and says I expect you to make them saves' tells you what we think of him."
