Sunderland's armed forces heros urged to apply for Veterans Badge
The Sunderland Armed Forces Network (SAFN) is inviting veterans to apply for their Veterans Badge.
Last year when the SAFN reminded people to apply, they received 186 applications and many of the veterans had their badge presented by the Mayor Coun Barry Curran in the Mayoral Party on Battle of Britain Day.
SAFN Chairman Graham Hall said: “Last year was a great success and we would like to ensure that veterans once again have the chance to have their service recognised.
“We are asking applicants to contact us and we will send them a form to be returned to us, then we will do the rest”.
Plans are now being made for another badge presentation event for those who would like to attend to be held on V.E. Day which is on Sunday, May 8.
The presentation will be held after the V.E. Day Commemoration at The Burdon Road War Memorial in the morning.
Graham added: “Sunderland has the higest proportion of veterans of any city in the UK. Many of those who served do not have their badges and we would like to help them rectify that issue.
“Those who may not want to be part of the presentation are still welcome apply for their badges and we will have them sent direct to their homes” .
The criteria to receive a Veterans Badge is that you must have served in regular or reserved forces or be in receipt of a Armed Forces Widows or Widowers Pension. It is immaterial how long you served or when you served or what age you are as everyone is classed as a veteran upon discharge.
Applicants are asked to ring 0191 561 1888 or email [email protected] to make their application.
