Sunderland youngster reflects on senior debut and 'massive boost' ahead of pre-season

Hume replaced Bryan Oviedo in the closing stages of the 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers after coming through the ranks of the club's academy.

Now 21, the left-back joined the Black Cats at the age of 10.

He made his Sunderland bow alongside Luke Molyneux and Bali Mumba, two fellow Academy of Light graduates.

Hume told safc.com: “It was a very proud moment me because I’ve waited a long time for it.

“I didn’t expect it to come this season, so I was really pleased just to get out there.”

“It’s been a long season and I’ve played a lot of games with the under-23s.

“To end the season on a high by making my debut at the Stadium of Light is something that I’ll never forget.

“It gives me a massive boost heading into the summer as I’ve now had a taste of where I want to be.

“Hopefully, I can come back for pre-season and really kick on, and play a few more games.”

Sunderland's players are due back for pre-season in late June and there are sure to be opportunities to impress for the club's young talent.

The senior squad is set for a significant overhaul once Stewart Donald's takeover is completed.

Donald is currently waiting for EFL approval and he has been encouraged by dialogue with the league so far. There is some hope that the deal could be signed off towards the end of the week but there is no time frame on the process.

Chris Wilder and Michael Appleton remain leading candidates for the managerial role once Donald and his consortium take charge.
