Paula Wilson, a member of staff at the Doxford Works centre, said it is so popular now that they needed to expand.
The centre also now employes 18 members of staff, mostly on part-time basis.
She said: “A lot of work has been carried out over the past three months.”
Previously the centre just had a big rope climbing wall, a smaller free climbing area and boulders.
Paula said: “We have created a children’s area. It is a bit like a soft play area, but is a learning zone for our younger climbers.
“We have also created a whole new boulder area, which has quadrupled the size of the boulder area we previously had.”
Paula said there are growing numbers of people of all ages who enjoy using the wall climbing centre on a regular basis. But, one of the main increases is the amount of children who are going along with their classmates.
She said: “We now have a lot of interest from schools and have had groups of kids in every day over the past two weeks.
“Some of them come on a regular basis and use the centre as part of their activities programme for the youngsters.”
Sunderland Wall Climbing Centre is one of the largest indoor climbing centres in the UK and caters for both new and experienced climbers.
It also hosts national championship competitions.
