A PROJECT which mentors volunteers will celebrate its first birthday next week.

Set up a year ago by Volunteer Centre Sunderland, the Volunteering Mentoring Project brings together people who want to volunteer with experienced mentors.

To date the project has recruited 40 mentors who have supported 140 people into various volunteering roles, including conservation, youth work, retail, animal care and fund-raising.

Of these, a total of 64 are now volunteering independently, after receiving valuable support from their volunteer mentors.

To celebrate the year’s achievements, an event will be held at the Place in Sunniside, Sunderland, on Monday.

Volunteers and their mentors will take part in a certificate presentation to recognise how they have given up their time for free to help the local community.

Anyone interested in volunteering is welcome to attend a free information event organised by VCS, which takes place at Houghton Sports Centre on Tuesday, April 10.
