Jermain Defoe’s first Sunderland goal helped the Black Cats end their home sickness, with a crucial three points against fellow strugglers Burnley.

Sunderland recorded only their second Premier League victory of the campaign at the Stadium of Light - and their first since October - to move four points clear of the relegation zone.

Connor Wickham gave Sunderland the ideal start when he headed home his fourth goal of the season from an Anthony Reveillere in the 20th minute, before new signing Defoe doubled the advantage before half-time with a typical poacher’s goal.

Jordi Gomez played a beautifully-weighted ball in behind the Burnley defence for Patrick van Aanholt, and the left-back’s pull-back left Burnley keeper Tom Heaton stranded and Defoe cushioned it into the empty net to open his Sunderland account.

Burnley never threatened any hint of a second half comeback, with Sunderland controlling proceedings and both of their goalscorers having opportunities to add to the margin of victory.

April 17, 2010

Sunderland consolidated 13th place in the Premier League as Burnley slipped closer to the drop.

Steve Bruce’s men secured a third successive home win as Fraizer Campbell and Darren Bent grabbed the crucial goals.

Campbell made the breakthrough on 25 minutes, sliding in to finish off on-loan full-back Alan Hutton’s cross from the right.

Bent doubled the lead five minutes before the break, volleying his 23rd goal of the season past keeper Brian Jensen after Campbell did brilliantly to head David Meyler’s chip back across goal.

Sub Steven Thompson threw Burnley a lifeline on 82 minutes when he slammed a 25-yarder past helpless keeper Craig Gordon, but Sunderland held firm to see out the win.

What a night this was!

Carlos Edwards hit a magnificent winner to take Sunderland back into top spot in the Championship, but there was much, much more for fans to savour.

Burnley gave as good as they got in a memorable Friday night match which left Roy Keane’s side knowing that victory at Luton in the final game of the season would clinch promotion back to the top flight at the first attempt.

Daryl Murphy gave Sunderland a 14th-minute lead before David Connolly hd a penalty saved by visiting keeper Brian Jensen.

Ex-Sunderland striker Andy Gray converted a 39th-minute penalty to haul the Clarets level, and the Stadium of Light was silenced by a stunning 25-yarder from Wade Elliott which put the visitors 2-1 up early in the second period.

But Sunderland, under Keane, were never to be written off and Connolly converted a spot-kick - his second and the game’s third - to level matters on 54 minutes.

Then the stage was set for a magnificent strike from winger Edwards into the top corner from 22 yards after Sunderland broke well down the left and Murphy set up the former Ipswich man.

Mick McCarthy’s Red and Whites made it seven wins in nine games as they consolidated third place in the Championship.

Julio Arca made the breakthrough in the 35th minute, with Sunderland’s first first-half goal in nine matches.

But Graham Branch instantly levelled matters.

Sunderland, though, sealed victory with a second goal seven minutes into the second period, with Liam Lawrence crossing and Michael Bridges getting a touch to send the ball over the line, leaving keeper Brian Jensen helpless.

November 29, 2003

Sunderland had to settle for a point in their First Division clash at home to Stan Ternent’s Burnley, and slipped to eighth place in the table as a result.

Michael Proctor was given his chance up front as Marcus Stewart was dropped, and manager Mick McCarthy’s faith was repaid as Proctor set up Kevin Kyle to break the deadlock with a fine strike six minutes before half-time.

But Burnley, with winger Glen Little arguably the best player afield, kept scrapping and rocked the home side with an equaliser 18 minutes from time, with Ian Moore on target.
