Chairman Stewart Donald revealed on Twitter that he expects to announce another new signing later today.

Jack Ross takes his side on a pre-season training camp next week, and so far has three new faces in his ranks - Alim Ozturk, Chris Maguire and Jon McLaughlin.

The Black Cats are hoping to add at least one more player to the squad before they leave, with Ross having switched his striker search after missing out on Lyle Taylor.

One forward who has been linked with Sunderland is Gavin Reilly. The frontman scored 22 goals under Ross at St Mirren, helping them to the Scottish Championship title, but his hopes of another deal were dashed by new Buddies boss Alan Stubbs.

That prompted speculation that Reilly would link up again with Ross at Sunderland but reports in Scotland now suggest he could be joining Bristol Rovers on a free transfer.

As well as strikers, Ross also needs new defensive options. He only has Ozturk and Papy Djilobodji as senior centre-halves at his disposal and looks set to miss out on Clark Robertson, who appears Rotherham-bound.

Another defender on Sunderland's radar is Jack Baldwin, the Peterborough centre-half. The former Hartlepool man has been told he has no future with Posh and is available for around £250,000.

Bolton Wanderers are also keen on the player but Sunderland are believed to be in pole position to sign him.

The Black Cats had also been linked with another ex-Pools defender, Shrewsbury's Toto Nsiala, but Shrews boss John Askey says he has had no offers for the player, nor his team-mate Jon Nolan who has also been linked with Sunderland.

Askey said: “No we haven’t (received any offers). Not that I’ve heard or been aware of – thankfully not.

"I believe they’ll be here at the start of the season. I’ve not heard anything from agents or other clubs."

One player Sunderland could tie up a deal for is Hibernian midfielder Dylan McGeouch by the weekend. The midfielder is out of contract and is weighing up a number of offers.

McGeouch was down on Wearside last week for talks with Sunderland but has admirers in Scotland, with Rangers and Aberdeen both keen on the player, while Hibs boss Neil Lennon hasn't given up hope of keeping him. Coventry have also been linked with the 24-year-old.

Meanwhile, Manchester United left-back Cameron Borthwick-Jackson remains on Sunderland's radar as they look to clinch a couple of season-long loan deals as well as make permanent signings.
