Manchester United leapfrogged the Black Cats thanks to a 1-0 derby victory over Manchester City, with Joe Rothwell’s goal enough to secure an eighth successive win for the Old Trafford youngsters.

United are two points clear of Sunderland and still have a game in hand – nine matches to play, to the Wearsiders’ eight.

Andy Welsh’s Sunderland side are back in action at home to Middlesbrough on Monday (Stadium of Light, 7pm), while United host Reading.
