TWO teenagers had to be rescued when they became trapped by the rising tide during a coastal walk between Hendon and Ryhope.

The operation was launched at 3.20pm yesterday, when the coastguard received a 999 emergency call from a fisherman reporting the pair were struggling to make it around the rocky headland.

Officers contacted Sunderland RNLI, to request the launch of their D Class inshore lifeboat.

The city youngsters, aged 14 and 15, were quickly located on rocks 100 metres south of Hendon promenade.

The call-out was Wearside lifeboat volunteers’ 100th rescue mission of the year.

People going for a walk along the coast are urged to check the tide times to avoid becoming stranded.
