Sunderland Sunday League: Millfield Oddies stage great escape to survive in Division Three

They beat Kings Arms 5-3 with doubles from Bryan Wood and Paul Maw supported by a Martin Adams strike.

The Kingsmen had a good go of it and reduced the scoreline through Stephen Dixon and two-goal Shaun Muncaster.

But Oddies saw out the win to move a point above Millfield Free Gardeners, who go down with Lakeside SSC.

Lakeside meet Kings Arms in the Third Division Subsidiary Cup final at Ford Quarry tomorrow (10.30am).

Park View must wait until May 20 for their final league game against Kings Arms, when a win will make them champions. A draw or defeat would hand Wearmouth CW Juniors the title.

Sunderland Railway Club took a huge step towards clinching second place in Division One, with a 3-1 defeat of third-top Redhouse Last Orders.

Pablo Carr hit a fine goal, his first for some time, to set Railway up for another win.

Paul Stokoe hit his usual goal for Redhouse before goal machine Dean Smith notched twice to steer Railway home.

Alex McDonald was Railway’s top performer, with Jordan Stewart best for the visitors.

Railway are four points above Redhouse, with two games in hand.

Jolly Potters have hit a little blip in their end-of-season run-in, going down 6-3 to New Town.

Ryan Bussey scored twice followed by Paul Webster’s effort after coming off the bench. But youthful New Town had doubles from Elliott Salicki and Alex Dobinson , with Lewis Jopling and Mark Mhlanga also on target. Jack Race starred for New Town, Gary Baker for Potters.

The Stella had to wait weeks for their last game of the season and it wasn’t worth the wait has they were swept aside 4-1 by mid-table Port of Call.

Martin Maggiore hit Stella’s reply as Dom Watson and Joe Lynn both netted twice to guide Port to victory.

Port of Call beat Thorney Close 3-1 on Tuesday, courtesy of Lynn (2) and Liam Houghton, with Aarron Forrest responding, then beat Washington Colliery 5-2 on Thursday, with three more matches still to fit in..

RCA Grangetown Florists were in pole position to take three massive points against Victoria Gardens in the Premier Division.

The Meadow Park side led 2-0 in the first half thanks to efforts from Andy Place and Chris Thompson, and looked good to strengthen their title claims.

But the Vics turned things round in style in the second period, hitting back to secure a precious 3-2 victory thanks to man of the match Richie Jordan’s double and a Chris Bewick strike.

Southwick and Victoria Gardens benefited from walkovers against Farra Paragon ISL and The Lansdowne respectively.

Farra have been confirmed in the second relegation spot, alongside Silksworth CW.

At the top, Southwick lead Vics by two points, with each having three games left. RCA are third, with five games to go, but now trail top spot by nine points.

Florists visit Southwick on Thursday, before the massive meeting of the top two next Sunday.

Clark Stead is slowly finding his feet for Hylton Castle TWR Group after his fine hat-trick downed Ryhope Foresters in a 3-1 home success.

Jack Ballantyne responded in vain for the Ryhope side but could do no more. Keeper Chris Sproat was once again Foresters’ star man, with Adam Drysdale taking the honours for TWR.
